The time is now:  Support Senate Bill 61 and House Bill 528.

Why do kids need booster seats?

Seat belts are made for adults. Booster seats help children fit properly in adult seat belts.  With a booster seat, the seat belt is placed on the strongest part of the child's body.

Without a booster seat, children are at risk for serious spinal cord and internal organ injuries, known in the medical community as "Seat Belt Syndrome."

How do the bills differ from our current law?

Texas' law currently requires a person transporting children under 5 years old and less than 36 inches tall to secure the child in a child safety seat or booster seat.

Under the current law, a 3 year-old child of average height will outgrow the law by the time they turn 4.  In a car crash, these kids are at risk of "seat belt syndrome" injuries, and sadly, even death.

The proposed law would require a person transporting a child under 8 years of age to secure the child in a child safety seat or booster seat, unless the child is 4'9" tall.

These guidelines reflect the recomendations of well respected organizations, including the American Academy of Pediatrics, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, and Safe Kids Worldwide.
